Thank goodness for Alizée fans

The TF1 appearance. There was no singing, no dancing... but I have to say we went crazy, as crazy as we can get online.

This appearance was close to slipping through the cracks. There was no promotion by Team Alizée, no Tumblr, no Twitter, no nothing.

Thank goodness for Alizée fans taking over the role of promotion and getting it out there for all the other fans to enjoy.

That needs repeating: Thank goodness for Alizée fans!

So why was this not promoted from within? I come up with 2 answers.

Not interested in promoting Alizée in this arena. Not "Rive Gauche" enough. There was no singing so who would be interested... We are not interested in selling more albums or having Alizée become more popular this way.

or

We blew it. We had no idea.

So I wonder what is going on in the next Team Alizée meeting? Are they saying: Whew that was a close one, we almost became more popular, sold more albums and started a 'tipping point' for upcoming concerts. We are exactly where we want to be.
or
Team, we just experienced a missed opportunity.

Did I mention this, thank goodness for Alizée fans!

You have to bear in mind that when it comes to small time TV interviews, very few are promoted. This is mainly because it's more a benefit for the networks than the artist to have them on. Fans of the artists are the ones who will follow, and this brings ratings to the network, not the other way around. (American talk shows are the exception to this rule, but they normally have millions of fans who tune in regularily. Tf1 and smaller stations whit small shows don't.)

If Britney Spears,or Lady Gaga are doing an interview on a relatively small radio or TV network, it is the network who will plug this appearance... not the artists or their label.

Some rebuttals for "Anonymous":

You say it was a small show, but this link reports 3.7 million viewers:

Further, its one thing if we are talking about Gaga who has media saturation, Alizée fans see very little in terms of TV appearance, even direct promotion. Every event can very easily be mentioned through her official channels.

The point is, it takes very little effort in todays day and age to put out a 140 char heads-up. That is all.

I totally agree with you ASA, and if I were to argue the merits of cheap publicity I would be totally on your side. As for Alizee or her camp not tweeting it themselves, I have no idea why they wouldn't. When you look at it from the label point of view though, it's hardly worth it to them. (although their view is quite skewed)

I've said all along that Sony (Jive) don't give a monkey's ass about Alizee. They seem to be no more than a distribution label for Wisteria Song, and therefore not interested in her success. I don't know what kind of agreement she and Sony have for publicity and marketing, but it's obviously minimal. Either that, or they're not living up to their end of the bargain... which has happened countless times in this business.

Ugh, don't get me started on major labels. Alizee won't be edgy or show her tits to everyone, so she's not even on their radar. Trust me, if she went on a 3 week meth and alcohol bender, flashed her pantiless crotch to the paparazzi, got in a bar fight, and then promised to go to rehab, Sony would make her the biggest selling artist in France.

Let's just thank god (or insert your personal saviour here) that Alizee is who she is and we have to dig our own info up on her. That is why we love her after all. Is it not? :)

Label support is non-existent, and yes, she did "only" sign a distribution deal with Sony AFAIK. Sadly numbers have been low which I suppose is part of the reason why we are seeing a somewhat lackluster ongoing marketing effort from all sides.

If it was not for the continual mention of a tour I would have called this album long dead and buried (at least as far as spending time and money on it from various players), would not be surprised if eventual tours contained more CM remakes of popular tracks from the past and less from this album, which is a crying shame.

I don't want to sound all negative, there are some things to look forward to, in fact I like that she remains "our little secret" to some degree. Ultimately we don't know whether she is happy or unhappy with the way things are dealt with, but I do believe if its the latter she will take whatever steps needed to rectify it.

As she continues to become more and more "Indie", hard lessons are being learnt as evidenced by the facebook wall fiasco (she had to turn posts off, as the workload of "liking" posts by 1000's of rabid fans is just unrealistic). I am confident though that she will learn from the "mistakes", the marketing management will change hands again with the next project and maybe then they will get it right.

Again, its not that they are doing things wrong so much as that it could be a little better, especially around the internet channels.
