Google Instant and Civilization
"As someone has said, civilization advances mainly by conquering time. Everything that permits man to do in five minutes what previously took him an hour, is a great boost forward for civilization. It enables him to live more than the lifetime of earlier men, because he makes more contacts, accomplishes more work, adds more stimulation and interests to his life, increases his comforts and satisfactions, speeds up his aims and multiplies his abilities."
Pertinent stuff... it is the first paragraph from the book "How to get More Business by Telephone" by Jack Schwartz. Published 1953, and he was referring to the telephone!
"Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose." - Alphonse Karr 1808-1890
(usually translated as: The more things change, the more they stay the same)
