Warning: If reading about the business side of the the business is boring for you...move on.
(*)1000 True fans, by Kevin Kelly is a business model theory for artist. It is an interesting read. I wonder how many artist actually work on the business side of things?
It is the same for anyone in business...you had a dream of being a baker, you have had some success but now you find yourself involved with packaging, distribution, trucking, etc.... wait...I just wanted to bake bread, those things were someone else's dreams. But you have to do it to continue. The business side of music...
Anyway...its a very interesting read....this is not telling anyone what they should do, just an interesting business theory...mainly for artists trying to make it.

When you can afford to live in an 8000 square foot house you must be doing something right. Selling her music may not be necessary to maintain her lifestyle.
Mylene Farmer didn't do a bad job marketing Alizee. Alizee's idol, Madonna, was very successful marketing her music.
Absolutely true. I thought this was an interesting bit of information regarding the music industry. I had not mentioned Alizee but then again I did not make it clear enough that it was a general article and not directed to her specifically.
Not all burst onto the scene, her Institube friends all seem to do well but perhaps they can recall those days...
And of course the story of profit and loss is always a relevant subject. Bill Gates may have made billions from XP and Vista but he still wants to know what the break even number is for Windows 7. Or is he doing well enough that he does not care?
How many "true fans" correlate to total album sales? It will be interesting to see how may twitter followers correlate. Will the current # of 2622 followers equal 500,000 sales? That will be fun to see.
I can't say I even agree with his notion of being more involved with blogging to be more personal with the fans. Kevin Kelly is a blogger, of course he would say that. If a newspaper advertiser would have written it they would have said more advertising is needed.
That is all it was, a look at numbers, how they relate, when money kicks in, what the survival number is and then on to profits.
Just a general thought, I know a few people in the recording industry, some label owners, some recording artists, and trust me, they all worry about sales. They would kill to have and address those 1000 loyal fans.
In Alizée’s case, she obviously needs much more than a 1000 True Fans because a lion’s share of the revenue goes to the record company and promotion. This isn’t a mom and pop shop she’s running. She’s signed to a multinational corporation. But the premise is still sound. As Kelly pointed out, there are fans who will only buy a CD if they like it, and their involvement ends there. But Alizée’s True Fans will buy multiple copies and do so much more; such as voting, promoting, disc-dropping, and creating artwork, music and videos in her honor, to name a few. These fans are emotionally connected to Alizée and could almost be considered her friends. That is why they desire some kind of acknowledgement from her that they exist, by way of an occasional interaction or communication with her. I continue to believe that this is an area where she can really reinforce her existing True Fans without much effort, as well as add significantly to their number.
Quite frankly, I don’t think Alizée is completely comfortable with having True Fans, but the other types of fans are not going to keep her career going for the long haul. I hope she understands this and finds a way to deal with it.
She just tweeted tonight and the True Fans are ecstatic.
I feel she has limited her fan contact to limit her appeal to the "stalker" fans, which she has complained about several times. How can she appeal to her "true" fans without some people invading her privacy?
No anonymous...you must come up with a solution to a problem you present. You must champion your cause.
There are millions of problems, we can find them everywhere. We don't need more problems. People who only find problems, why things can't work don't get paid very well. People who find solutions get paid better. So in lieu of how it can't work, or a 100 reasons how it will not work, I challenge you to come up with 1 way it could work.
And a philosopy for life. Do I want 100 ways it will not work or 1 way it could work...which are you?
Another way to understand Alizee - in many ways she is what Paris Hilton is not.
